3 Real People Reversing Their Diabetes Symptoms With Fasting

Can type 2 diabetes be reversed? It’s one the most pressing medical questions of our time.

Type 2 diabetes has long been accepted as an inevitably progressive disease, but recently a handful of clinical trials and research studies have suggested otherwise.

Excited by this research people around the world have been making themselves guinea pigs, and experimenting with intense dieting and fasting.

We scoured the internet for real stories from people young and old, who’ve documented all or part of their journey using food to reverse their symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Here’s what they had to say.

Strict dieting and T2 diabetes

Richard Doughty is a published writer on the Guardian, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at 59. He lived a relatively active lifestyle and had never been overweight.

When researching treatment options, Richard came across news of a research trial with evidence that type 2 diabetes could be reversed by switching to a daily 800-calorie diet for 8 weeks.

Richard was monitored by a physician throughout his extreme dieting phase, and coordinated with his doctor on when he could successfully return to a normal diet.

“It wasn’t easy. Yet water staved off the worst hunger pangs…

On day four, my glucose levels had dropped to 4.6 after fasting for 10 hours overnight. It was the first time I’d ever scored a 4.

But on day six, I felt really cold. It was mid-July but in the morning my fingertips were white and I had to wear a T-shirt, shirt, jumper and jacket to work.

I was hungry, and just walking around the office was tiring. But I was down to 9st 3lb. By day eight, I was being called the ‘disappearing man’, and began to feel a bit detached from my colleagues…”

And what were his results?

“I waited two months to be sure, but on 24 September last year it was confirmed. Following a fasting glucose test at my surgery, my doctor declared: ‘The diabetes has resolved itself.'”

Intermittent fasting and T2 diabetes

Michael Darcey has been using YouTube as a journal of his daily progress and challenges with intermittent fasting. Many of his videos give a glimpse at his meals and progress in cutting down on his multiple medications.

Many nutrition and fitness coaches have discussed the evidential merits of intermittent fasting on YouTube, though not as many people have used YouTube to share their experience.

Interested in giving fasting a try?

Depending on your age, gender, and which version of fasting you choose, medical supervision is essential to prevent you from having an emergency visit to the hospital. The importance of consulting your doctor before fasting can not be stressed enough.

A primary care physician can prep you on high-risk side effects to be especially cautious of, and assist in monitoring your progress. Remember, you can always consult a new doctor if your current one is unreceptive to your interest in diet change—so don’t feel you have to go the journey alone.
