College is a lot of newness all at once – from sitting in lectures and living in dorms to attending parties and managing finances, it can be overwhelming. But, get this, you’re not alone, everyone is anxious about things. Don’t just take our word for it, here’s what a group of college students had to say on the matter.


Squad Goals



Going into college, you’ll meet people you simply don’t click with and that’s inevitable. It’s not because you’re too different or reserved, that you don’t vibe. Let’s put it this way: you’re going to meet people you don’t see yourself in and that’s normal. They won’t be the first or the last person you meet.

“I feel totally isolated and everyone my age seems so artificial and self absorbed. I would say find your passions in life and stick with em.”Kissa

“I feel like a lot of people are fake too, and I’m the only real, raw, honest, logical person in the room. Everyone else just wants to party, gossip, be fake nice to each other, and I don’t get it. Why can’t you just be yourself and real?” –Ann


The Do You Principle



When you’re changing your environment, surroundings and support system, it can be difficult to stay true to who you are. Being yourself requires knowing yourself. Don’t shy away from expressing different parts of yourself. Simply, Do You. When you follow the Do You Principle, you will inherently attract those who relate. It’ll require patience, honesty and confidence but it’s worth it.

“The single, best way to fit in is not to change yourself – it is to find like minded people. Find an activity or group that appeals to you and join. Find the puzzle that’s missing a You-shaped piece, not the other way around.”

Uniqueness in Unity



College campuses are filled with people from different backgrounds, ethnicities and subcultures. Everyone is different and unique in their own way. You can treat these differences as barriers or opportunities. What better way of making the best out your college experience than to embrace your uniqueness? Be open, get yourself out there, explore your surroundings, join clubs you relate to–your differences don’t limit you, they make you.

“When I started university over three years ago, I was overwhelmed by the new people, the new course, the new town, the new lifestyle and the “new me” that I felt pressured to find. University is where you find yourself, right? Where was I? Who was I? And so nobody truly fits in, because there is no mould.” – Kristen

“Sometimes you just sit next to someone you plain don’t click with. And that’s OK! Try again at the next class! Not everyone in the same class has the same interests, the same academic goals, etc. So just talk to people until you find some you click with. Don’t let yourself get disheartened.” –Rebecca

“See..the matter is not about fitting in but it’s about acceptance! Even a square of the same dimensions as a circle can’t fit in it. Master something of your interest. Not everyone can be a party organizer nor everyone can be a doctor. It takes different abilities and planning to achieve different milestones.”


College is the place where you not only get to meet other people–but also get to know yourself. Editing yourself to fit in is a sign that you haven’t found your clique yet. Don’t compromise. Au contraire, free your wings and be unapologetically yourself. Eventually, you will attract the right people into your life.
